couple of different things. one, thr records that we have found that show that hawaii state government really underestimated the deadly threat of these fires and were underresourced, they didn t spend enough to try to make sure that people were safe. the white house has said that the president has had frequent contact with hawaii s congressional delegation and the governor, governor green. so i want to know i know it s a delicate time, but has there been discussion from the president about some of these issues that have come up where there wasn t good preparation and there weren t good resources put in place before this that may have been able to prevent at least some of this disaster? so, sara, those are incredibly important questions to ask and they should be asked. we certainly want to make sure we get to the bottom of what happened and understand what happened. i understand that we ve seen the reports, obviously, i understand the state attorney general has opened up an investig
outsiders when you read the reporting that they ve been underresourced. what is their actual wish list, if you know, i m not trying to be polite. what is the difference between what they have and what they need to win? let me say two things, first. it s great the patriots are coming now. but why didn t they come four or five months ago, when many of us were talking about that they needed them, right? and i would say that you could have that same debate about every weapons system. general mccaffey just told you what the ukrainian wish list was. they want tanks, they want firefighter aircraft, even if they have to have mig 29s retrofitted, they want weapons that can go on the offensive. what they fear the most, when i talk to ukrainians, is a long stalemated war, that could go on and on and on, that we lose interest in. and two things happen. we lose interest, and ukrainians die. remember, if those patriots had been there before, maybe
we began hiring at the end of last school year. we provided teachers with advanced a d degrees. we negotiated a health benefits package that was very favorable. we re providing a counteroffense to the some conditions teachers face, underresourced, certainly lacking some of the respect they deserve. a lot of states passing legislation that removes some of the rights that teachers have, and certainly intimidating force. and then, of course, colleges and education are not graduating enough candidates for teaching positions. less than 2% of individuals are choosing to enter colleges of education. when the country needs 3.6 million teachers every year, that s just insufficient. and look, this is a problem only exacerbated by the pandemic. we had seen these trends long before 2020. but they just really have been highlighted over the past two years. you said your district has been able to staff every one of our schools by hiring 1500 teachers,
