Irish Falter Down Stretch, Drop 78-73 Battle to UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Just when it was looking like it would be four wins in a row for the Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (8-6, 6-4), the North Carolina Tar Heels (8-5, 3-5) stormed back in the final minutes to escape with a 78-73 win. The Irish were up 70-63 with 4:36 remaining but did not record a field goal over the final 2:54 of the game.  Dara Mabrey poured in 23 points in today’s effort, including 14 in the second half. It marked her second 20+ point performance over the past three games. The junior connected on 5-of-10 from three-point range. Furthermore, Mabrey dished out a career high seven assists. 

Irish Halt Hokies, 65-60, in Win

BLACKSBURG, VA. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team (8-5, 6-3) achieved that elusive third straight win, starting its roadtrip with a 60-65 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies (7-6, 2-6). The Irish continue to ride their momentum, winning five of their past six, as they kicked off a daunting five-game road swing.    Destinee Walker scored 13 points in the second quarter before finishing with a team-high 16 points. Walker finished 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Dara Mabrey followed right behind with 14 points, which included four clutch free throws in the final minute.  Maddy Westbeld achieved her first career double-double on Thursday, posting 13 points and a career high 12 rebounds. Lastly, Anaya Peoples was crucial down the stretch, scoring eight of her 11 points in the final quarter.

After the first day of competition, Notre Dame leads Missouri State, 203-35.  “The men are really energetic, and they appreciate being able to compete more than ever,” head swim coach Mike Litzinger said. “Our whole philosophy is that we’re going to get something out of this season. Right now, the men are on a roll, and they’re feeling really good about themselves.

Junior forward Graham Slaggert was named the Big Ten’s First Star of the Week (Jan. 19). Slaggert and the Irish posted a 3-2 win in game one at Minnesota, with Slaggert assisting on Notre Dame’s first two goals and adding the third period game winner. It marked a career-best three points for the South Bend, Indiana native who now has a career-best 11 points (4-7-11) on the season.

Game 13 Preview: @ Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey instructed her squad to ‘continue to build.’ The Fighting Irish (7-5, 5-3) will look to do just that Thursday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Virginia Tech (7-5, 2-5). Tip is set for 7 p.m. EST inside Cassell Coliseum. The contest is a RSN (Regional Sports Networks) game, so please check your local listings. For those in the South Bend area, expect the game to be on the Marquee Network. HISTORY WITH VIRGINIA TECH Notre Dame leads the overall series, 12-2, with a 4-1 record in Blacksburg.  The two sides last clashed on Dec. 17 at Notre Dame, where the Irish surged past for the 84-78 victory. Anaya Peoples shone bright in that matchup, scoring 13 of her 15 total points in the second half.
