Kentucky s Oldest Restaurant Isn t Far from Owensboro

In a recent conversation with my sister, we began discussing our trips out west to New Mexico to visit my mom s family. The talk turned to restaurants we always enjoyed when we went out there, even though eating out was a rare occurrence. But that was only because my aunts and my step-grandmother were such awesome cooks who were always whipping up Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine that would knock your socks off. But when we WOULD go out, Uncle Vic made it count. There s a place in a tiny unincorporated town called Pinos Altos, just north of Silver City where my family lives. The restaurant is called Buckhorn and it is temporarily closed. But back in the day, it thrived and that was because, of course, the food was absolutely amazing. But the place had tons of history, being among the oldest restaurants in Grant County. So good.

One of these relationships is with Uncle Vic, who basically adopted me as his Chinatown goddaughter from the moment we met. It all started with me gushing to Uncle Vic about my dad’s records, which I had found hidden in my family’s home in California, just a few days before I had packed up to move to New York. From there, Uncle Vic told me about his grandfather’s record and tape collection that covers an entire wall in his apartment, most of which hadn’t been touched for d

Robert Gant on Queer as Folk, 20 Years Later

Queer as Folk, 20 Years Later Gant’s HIV-positive Ben Bruckner (pictured, standing, third from right) may be the show’s most enduring character. December 11 2020 1:41 PM EST As I’ve mentioned before, I grew up in Pittsburgh, so when Showtime premiered the first-ever network broadcast of a gay drama 20 years ago this month, based in Pittsburgh, my interest was naturally piqued. I was disappointed, and in hindsight maybe tinged with jealousy, after watching the first few episodes in what seems like a lifetime ago. The show’s thumping, gay-central Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh was nothing like the thoroughfare I knew intimately, lined with office buildings and straight bars; more Wall Street than Christopher Street. I understood that the creators wanted to show that gay life could thrive in a smaller metropolis, in the Midwest, but I wasn’t buying that happening in Pittsburgh.
