‘Mzali Wam’ series highlights plight of victims and role of patriarchy

It is often said that art imitates life and the phrase could not be truer for Mzansi Magic’s new drama series mirroring the plight of human trafficking victims in SA.
With two Eastern Cape actors Masasa Mbangeni and Dumisani Mbebe leading the cast,
Mzali Wam premiered to critical acclaim on Monday night.
Port Elizabeth’s Mbangeni plays Joyce Khaphayi, a woman whose child (Ntokozo) is stolen from her after birth, only to later cross each other’s paths when the presence of a human trafficking syndicate shocks the community.

DINEO Ranaka will be introducing
Mzali Wam, the first TV drama series she has produced, for Mzansi Magic.
Dineo, the reality TV star and Metro FM DJ, produced the show through her production company, Brains At Work Media Productions.
She created
The Mzansi Magic show premieres on 4 January. It features former
Scandal! actress, Masasa Mbangeni,
Generations actor, Dumisani Mbebe and Nolwazi Shange is the main character.
Dineo told
Daily Sun the show has been eight years in the making.
“After having a baby girl, I started seeing the world through a darker lens, thinking about things like human trafficking,” she said.
Nomsa Philiso, the director of local entertainment channels at M-Net, says: Mzali Wam is set to be a thriller that will introduce viewers to the inner workings of a human trafficking syndicate, through the life of a young Ntokozo, in a story that will resonate with many South Africans. From the star-studded cast to the exceptional storyline, viewers will find themselves on the edge of their seats with every episode.
Set in Johannesburg,
Mzali Wam was created by industry heavyweights Dineo Ranaka and Siphosethu Tshapu of Brains At Work Media production. Mbebe will play Terror, a businessman who Joyce later discovers is not the person she thought he was.
