Even in the coronavirus pandemic, the heart of Worcester and its cultural and arts institutions are optimistic and committed to supporting and growing the community.
“The excitement is real, and that’s what allows us to be where we are now,” said Che Anderson, assistant vice chancellor for city and community relations at UMass Medical School in Worcester. “The resilience is real and that’s what afforded the arts an opportunity to still move and thrive and pivot in a way that other industries haven’t been able to during the pandemic.”

SHIVA KUMAR as its newest member of the board of advisors. Kumar previously served as chief strategy officer and head of business development for Watson Health at IBM from 2015-2020, worked for the consulting firm McKinsey & Co., and was an associate professor at Yale University’s Physics Department. As senior executive at IBM since 2003, he has pioneered analytics use to improve its revenue and profit performance, and co-founded and led teams at IBM Research to develop the capabilities of IBM Watson Health.

UMass Memorial Health, the largest healthcare provider in Central Massachusetts, on Friday confirmed it is starting its own health insurance division.
The insurance company called Central Mass Health LLC will be organized under the UMass Memorial Health Ventures umbrella, which is for all the non-hospital aspects of the UMass Memorial system. The establishment of Central Mass Health is in keeping with our long-term strategy to become a more integrated healthcare delivery network, UMass spokesman Anthony Berry said. Over time we have built a lot of assets - including a strong provider arm - but have felt that an important missing piece to achieving total integration was an insurance product.
For more than a month and a half, Saint Vincent Hospital’s administration and hundreds of nurses have been locked in a tense strike over staffing levels.
The standoff comes at a crossroads time for unions: their number of members has been on a steady decline for decades, and a high-profile unionization vote among Amazon warehouse workers in Alabama was voted down in early April.
At the same time, unions have gained strength at two other healthcare spots in Central Massachusetts: UMass Medical School in Worcester and Milford Regional Medical Center. The federal government has two strong union backers in President Joe Biden and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, the former Boston mayor.
