A new cookbook celebrates the items one finds in the regular stock at ALDI, the discount grocery store. The cookbook, like the store, is austere. But no doubt shoppers fan favorites are found within the pages. The Unofficial ALDI Cookbook: Delicious Recipes Made with Fan Favorites from the Award-Winning Grocery Store, by Jeanette Hurt, (Ulysses Press, $17.95).
All the recipes take budget-friendly ALDI-brand ingredients and turn them into homecooked dishes.
ALDI started out as Albrecht’s grocery store in 1913 in Germany. Eventually, the Albrecht brothers took over from their mother, and they turned it into Albrecht Discount, or ALDI, for short. In 1976.

Thanks to a recent crop of niche cocktail books, you can now raise a glass in honor of characters in your favorite movies, novels and television shows. Think of the recipes as fan fiction in liquid form: Many of the cocktails featured in their pages are classic drinks just dressed up in cosplay drag, draped in the whimsy of the fictional worlds from which they emerged. Because sure, a G&T is nice, but it might be even better transformed into a
