Miraziz Bazarov. On his social media accounts, Mr. Bazarov advocates for the decriminalisation of consensual same-sex conduct between men in Uzbekistan. In early March 2021, he expressed support for a joint statement calling for the decriminalisation of consensual sexual relations between adult menpublished by international and national NGOs, including the OMCT and FIDH. Fiji wins presidency of UN Human Rights Council
Fiji has won the recent diplomatic contest to become the first Pacific island nation to take the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The body this month elected Fiji’s chief diplomat in Geneva, Nazhat Shameem Khan, as its 2021 leader with 29 of the 47 member nations voting for her.
The UNHRC was formed in 2006, purportedly to promote and preserve human rights around the world, as well as to investigate possible violations by UN member states. Its members are elected every three years by the UN General Assembly. It has become another arena for nation-state rivalries, with participating countries seeking to cover up their own abuses while denouncing their rivals over “human rights” at the same time.

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND (15 January 2021) - The Human Rights Council today elected H.E Nazhat Shameem Khan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Fiji to the United Nations Office at Geneva, to serve as its President for 2021. Ambassador Khan was elected through a secret ballot process through which all 47 members of the Geneva-based human rights body cast their vote to appoint its president for 2021 – the Council’s 15th annual cycle.
Ambassador Khan, whose presidency takes immediate effect, joins the Ambassadors of the Bahamas, Sudan and Netherlands, who were elected vice-presidents of the Council in December, to serve on the Council Bureau for the current year. The election of the fourth vice-president, from the Eastern European Group, will take place following negotiations within the Group.

Ambassador Khan is Fiji’s Permanent Representative of the Republic to the United Nations Office at Geneva. She will preside over the UN body for 2021.
