Kingsberry case The High Court in Belfast granted permission in early July for the family of a former member of the UDA, William Kingsberry – shot dead in 1991, to sue Libya for supplying the assault rifle used by the IRA unit that killed him.  New approach The Kingsberry case, which is civil not criminal, is a new approach to gaining compensation for those killed or injured by Libyan-supplied matériel – and will be the first of many. Kevin Winters of KRW Law is bringing a number of civil cases against the Libyan State to gain compensation for victims. The PSNI initially refused to confirm that Libyan-supplied Semtex was used in explosions after 1986; but a case brought by Belfast solicitors  KRWLaw in Belfast on behalf of a number of victims has established the link to the AKM rifle used in the 1991  Kingsberry case. The  Kingsberry case creates a precedent for many other victims.

A big lie that prevailed through much of the Troubles period was that the British Government did not - and would not - talk to terrorists. In fact, Edward Heath s Government negotiated the first IRA ceasefire in June 1972. The British offered a meeting between the Secretary of State, William Whitelaw, and the IRA leadership. The IRA learnt a lot from that process. They knew by the time it was over that the British would talk to them again some day. The British had effectively disclosed their understanding of what a ceasefire entailed. It was simply to be an agreement that the IRA would not shoot soldiers, or police officers, and would not bomb property. Killing civilians and other paramilitaries didn t ruffle British ministers.

Winston Rea, 69, from Springwell Road, in Groomsport, County Down, faces up to 19 charges. They include aiding and abetting the murders of two Catholic men. Mr Rea denies all the charges, which are based on interviews he allegedly gave to the US college. The recording were made as part of an oral history project and the prosecution alleges Mr Rea took part on the understanding they would not be published until after his death.

Highly likely voice on tape Winkie Rea s: expert tells trial

A voice analysis expert has concluded it was highly likely that alleged former loyalist terror boss Winston Winkie Rea is the speaker heard on a recording confessing to involvement in murders and other crimes, his trial heard yesterday. The 69-year-old from Springwell Road in Groomsport, Co Down, faces 19 charges following interviews he is alleged to have given to Boston College in the US on the understanding they would remain unpublished until after his death. Yesterday his Diplock-style no-jury trial at Belfast Crown Court was told samples from the seven Boston tapes of an Interviewee L were compared with known extracts of Rea s voice taken from several sources.
