ukrainians seeking asylum at the southern border with mexico is growing by the day. authorities estimate more than 1500 ukrainians fleeing russia s invasion of their homeland are now waiting in the border city of tijuana. cnn s priscilla alvarez is joining us now. they say it s easier to get a visa to mexico than the u.s. the wait is usually more than 24 hours and then as they approach the port of entry, that s where they gain entry. there are trump era pandemic in place but the department of homeland security to make exemptions for ukrainians on a case by case basis. paroled into the united states and the reason they re choosing this is because ukrainians, it s easier to get a visa to mexico. much harder to get a visa to united states and the limited pathways to come here, despite the commitment from the administration to accept up to
100,000 ukrainian refugees. in the interim, with limited pathways that take a long time, they opt to go to the u.s./mexico border to regain entry into the u.s. particularly when title 42 goes away, it becomes, if it s successful, a bigger path to entry to the u.s. for ukrainians? they re already exempt from it. again, most of them are exempt, so it shouldn t make a big difference when the restrictions lift for everyone, but as always, it can strain resources. understood. we ll be watching closely. priscilla alvarez, thank you so much. the head of jp morgan chase warns on the economic impact of the war in ukraine. how it would likely get worse in coming weeks and months. we ll have that coming up. clearly possible that this, what we re seeing, these horrific images are just going to harden the resolve of ukrainians even more. we ve seen images of bodies on the streets in bucha almost sprinkled about on one of the main thoroughfares there. some of them with their hands tied behind their back, killed, execution-style. they re wearing civilian clothes and then there s a mass grave that was dug by a church. our fred pleitgen has been there, he has seen it and talked to us about what officials there are saying. the estimates of how many bodies are in this mass grave that was used by people there in bucha during the russian invasion, they vary. i heard from the mayor earlier who said there was up to 290 bodies that were inside of this mass grave. here s what he told me. translator: there are different kinds of people, many children, many teenagers.
