navy at the time. it was named after a 17 century military leader that led a campaign against the russians all the way back in 1618. when war broke out across ukraine, ukrainian flagship was in port for repairs. russia s much larger navy was starting to close in, and ukrainian flagship captain feared that those repairs would not be finished in time to prevent the crown jewel of ukraine s navy from falling into russian hands. so, just one week into the war with russia, that ukrainian captain made a decision that he and his crew would sink it themselves. ukrainian sunk their own flagship vessel. at the time, ukraine s defense minister described the situation as this way, quote, it is hard to imagine a more difficult decision for a courageous man and his crew, but we will build a new fleet. that was the first flagship to go down in this war. this week, we saw a second flagship in this war sink under very different circumstances. ukrainian forces took down the
eastern ukraine. military equipment was rolling through the streets of donetsk and luhansk. it is being spun as a peacekeeping mission but it is a coordinated invasion in ukraine territory. violence erupts along the line of contact but could expand with direct fighting between russia and ukraine. two ukrainian soldiers were killed overnight and there was a funeral held today for a ukrainian captain. the coffin is carried outside of the ministry of defense. he was killed on saturday when a shell fired by russian backed separatists hit his position in eastern ukraine. he is a hero in ukraine. he is remembered as a ukraine patriot. it is hard to lose him. ceremony is underway for one of the ukraine soldiers killed this week.
