Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine ‘highly’ effective against UK variant

Novavax has announced that its COVID-19 vaccine NVX-CoV2373 has a final efficacy of 96.3% against mild, moderate and severe disease caused by the original COVID-19 strain in its UK-based Phase III trial.
The study enrolled more than 15,000 people aged 18-84 years, including 27% over the age of 65.
In addition to the final efficacy analysis against the original COVID-19 strain, Novavax found that NVX-CoV2373 was 86.3% effective against the B.1.1.7 variant first discovered in the UK.
This demonstrates an overall vaccine efficacy of 89.7%, according to Novavax.
On top of the Phase III data, Novavax also unveiled data from a Phase IIb trial of NVX-CoV2373 conducted in South Africa.
At least 7% of the samples from COVID-19 cases in the country involve new variants of coronavirus, an official of the Department of Health said on Monday.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - More than one million Virginians are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but with variants spreading in communities, experts warn of another possible wave of sicknesses.
“The virus is still circulating. So even without new variants there’s a risk that by relaxing our social distancing and mask wearing that we can see a fourth wave,” William Petri, an infectious disease doctor at UVA Health, said.
Even though coronavirus cases in the Blue Ridge Health District are low, Petri warns about a contagious variant in the commonwealth.
NA temporarily suspends activities amid surge in Covid cases
Official statement says all offices of secretariat to remain closed until March 16

ISLAMABAD:
As Covid cases surge across the country following a third wave of the virus, the National Assembly announced a temporary suspension of all its activities on Sunday.
According to a statement released by the NA secretariat s administration, offices of the secretariat will remain closed for two days.
The announcement further said that all sessions of the standing and special committees and public accounts have been cancelled as part of the decision. The offices, it added, will remain closed until March 16.
