monarch kirk out, out, out. there was only about 100 of them and 1.3 million supporters. uk uncut, you had hundreds of house to a suddens of protests or tens of thousands? not as many as hundreds of thousands but certainly there were quite a few. we have 5,000 protests every year on the streets on london and the public pays a lot of money to make sure they take place as safely as possible. the cultural history of exactly that if you look at speakers corner, you look at your books look at hyde park, look at the cultural history, forget rules and resources, the cultural history of both debate and speaking out it s all in england. correct. and if you think about it a guy like john wilkes, has anybody heard of john willings? no. you never heard of him? imogen? really bad now, aren t i? john wilkes. i found it this guy was
companies like bank of america and fedex and verizon do is pay the effective 35% rate. bring those profits back to the united states and pay the effective rate. we would get $100 billion extra dollars in revenue every year if corporations just paid a 35% effective rate and paid taxes like the rest of us. my guess is they re not going to volunteer that. tlp has to be a movement that moves politicians and that s exactly what you guys are trying. one last question for you. do you think we re going to get protests of that vise here? is it going to build to that at some point? you know, i think after one month of organizing when you see u.s. uncut protests in 40 different u.s. cities, west coast, east coast, south, midwest, i think there s a good chance. by this time next year, you ll see a lot more numbers in the streets. conservatives have to join in. if they care about fairness and people not paying their fair share, they ve got to be on your side.
how do we do that over here? well, cenk first of all, thanks for having me on your show. uk uncut has been about for seven months. they had between 50,000 and 400,000 protesters, just through social media and word of mouth. th isheacofrgizg. ceraze leaderless mooumt movements. we re not at uk uncut s numbersing but we re getting there. what drove the numbers? is it spending cuts or inequity. you saw the chant there. the banks got bailed out and it doesn t look like they re contributing at all. is it the unfairness that you think are driving so many people to the streets or is it simply that we re getting cut too much and we can t take it. i think it s just the magnetism of their message. their message is so simple. before you cut us, before you make teachers and police officers and firefighters fay for these budget cuts, how about
it to the incredible pushback we ve seen in the uk, in britain to another anti-democratic attempt to push through very unpopular austerity measures by a coalition government that does not elected to do this. and what you see in britain is is a very clear attempt to not only say okay, we don t want our education cut, we don t want our health care cut, which is happening, but more importantly, uk uncut, which is now spreading to the u.s. has cropped up and they re planning actions on february 26. and what they re doing is going after the corporations that are flot paying their taxes. they re going after the tax dodgers directly at their store fronts. companies like vodofone. today, big protests against barclays bank. and showed if these corporations paid their taxes, you wouldn t have to be gutting public services. i think that in terms of resisting the shock doctrine, you have to have your own story to resist the panic story being sold to you. and that s really key.
