A long-anticipated U.K. environmental bill is currently in the House of Lords and is expected to pass before the global climate summit takes place in Scotland later this year.
Environmental advocates have criticized the bill for failing to include human rights protections and allowing forms of deforestation deemed legal under local laws.
In a consultation held by a U.K. government agency, some representatives of the meat and oilseed industries pushed back against the threat of fines for importing products or commodities linked to illegal deforestation.

IPC, ITI to Host Conference on Critical and Emerging Environmental Product Requirements
IPC and the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) will host a virtual conference, “Critical and Emerging Environmental Product Requirements” on June 29 from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm EDT. The event will explore the latest environmental requirements that impact product design, manufacturing, supply chain management, and technology innovation.
Speakers will include leading environmental regulatory experts Paul Tennant, Graeme Vickery and Hermione Mackelworth from the U.K. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Madalina Laxton from the European Commission, Directorate-General for the Environment, and Joel Wolf from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
USDA Releases Final Rule on Hemp Cultivation
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released its
final rule governing the cultivation of hemp, which will take effect March 22, 2021. The draft rule would have required hemp to be shown to contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannibanol (THC) on testing conducted within 15 days of harvest, a proposal that drew criticism from several parties. The final rule reduces some of the requirements, such as allowing 30 days to test and raising the negligence threshold to 1% rather than 0.5%. The rule also allows some flexibility for states to develop testing methods that take into account variables such as regional environmental factors.
