The first Gloucestershire roads to be resurfaced this year

Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) has announced which roads will be first to be resurfaced in 2021. The authority is aiming to have resurfaced, patched or treated 222 miles or road by the end of the 2020/21 financial year. Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, said: “Keeping our work on schedule during the pandemic has been challenging and I want to thank each and every one of our highways service staff for going above and beyond to keep Gloucestershire’s roads moving. They have worked extremely hard to catch up and exceeded our works programme, delivering the £150 million investment into your highways, and bringing a smoother ride for cyclists too.

One of unsung heroes of WW2 celebrates her 100th birthday

A FORMER Whalley woman who served in the WAAF during the Second World War will be celebrating her 100th birthday tomorrow. Mrs Evelyn Armstrong, born in Whalley but now living in Duns in the Scottish Borders, has received a letter of congratulations from Station Commander RAF Boulmer, Group Captain David Keighley, on behalf of the Royal Air Force. Evelyn attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School but declined to go on to university in preference to contributing financially at home. She worked in a solicitor’s office in Blackburn later moving to the Post Office as a telephone operator where she was a colleague of the, then unknown, operatic contralto Kathleen Ferrier.
