UI holding green events in lead-up to Earth Day

Also as part of Earth Month, UI Landscape Services Tree Crew announced they have been using biodegradable, renewable, less hazardous canola oil in their chainsaws instead of petroleum-based bar and chain oil. “It always bothered me when cutting near water or wet pavement that you could see an oil slick from the petroleum-based bar and chain oil. I did a little research and found that many use canola (rapeseed oil) without sacrificing performance or affecting the saw negatively,” said Andy Dahl, UI arborist in Building & Landscape Services.

Cancer in Iowa: Black Iowans die at disproportionate rates, study finds

Black people in Iowa develop and die from cancer at higher rates than their neighbors, according to an annual report from researchers at the University of Iowa. “The causes of these disparities are deeply ingrained in our society, and it will take significant effort at many levels over a long period of time to address them,” Dr. George Weiner, the director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa s Hospitals and Clinics, told reporters. “If we are able to do so successfully, it will benefit all Iowans.” Weiner and the co-authors of the report presented their findings, with a focus on racial disparities, during a virtual panel Wednesday morning.

New Coronavirus Cases and Deaths Still Happening in Iowa

SPM News, 304 031121 304 031121 On Thursday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 19 additional COVID-19 deaths and a further 412 confirmed cases.The department says in Woodbury County, there have been 31 new cases added to the total case count in the last 24 hours. Woodbury County has a 14-day COVID-19 positivity rate of 6.4 percent, which was unchanged from yesterday. Another Crawford County resident has succumbed to the novel coronavirus, according to state statistics.As of 1 p.m. today,  7,687 people in Woodbury County had received both shots of a two-dose vaccine, while another 568 had received a single-dose vaccine, according to state statistics.
