Reopening of schools after COVID-19 closures: 11m girls may not return in Nigeria, others

By Adesina Wahab Over 11 million girls in low and middle income nations such as Nigeria may not return after the reopening of schools following their closure as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a report by the World Bank has noted. The report, titled “Realising the returns to schooling: How COVID-19 and school closures are threatening women’s economic future, ” said the pandemic is eroding the gains made in girls’ education in recent years. The Bank noted that urgent action is needed to ensure that girls and women can realise the returns to their schooling, as one additional year of schooling for girls means their wages could go up by 12 percent.

Mr Anderson Nzebe, ASUP National President, made the call while rounding off his working visit to the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, on Sunday. Nzebe said the call for such commission was to guarantee the desired growth and development in the nation’s polytechnic education sector. According to him, ASUP needs such commission as against the present system of being regulated by a body, which oversees over 600 other institutions with uncorrelated needs and policies.

Gunmen storm Ughelli Church, kill policeman during service -

By Perez Brisibe UGHELLI – A gang of unidentified gunmen said to be terrorising Ughelli and environs in the past few weeks struck again yesterday at a church in the town killing a police inspector and taking away his rifle. The incident happened at the premises of a popular pentecostal church located along Oviri-Ogor road in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North local government area of Delta State. According to security sources, the late Police Inspector identified as Mr. Ninyel Nwangwang was attached to the PMF 31, Ogwashi-Uku and was on escort duty to the church when he was killed. Though the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe said he was not aware of the incident when contacted earlier, the police source who confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the policeman was confirmed dead at the Central Hospital, Ughelli were he was rushed to for medical attention.
