Still aged only 21,
Selemon Barega has already achieved a lot within the sport. He has won world U18 and U20 titles and has reached the 5000m finals at two senior World Championships, placing fifth in 2017 at the age of 17 and second in 2019 while still a teenager. His 5000m PB of 12:43.02, meanwhile, is a world U20 record and places him fifth on the world all-time list.
He started the year with an impressive 27:58.5 clocking for 10,000m at altitude in Addis Ababa, the fastest time ever achieved in Ethiopia. He then worked on sharpening his speed, setting PBs of 3:32.97 for 1500m and 7:26.10 during the indoor season. That heady mix of beastly endurance and strong finishing speed means Barega will be a danger in championship races.

Top guns will line up tomorrow at the Discovery Kenya cross country in Eldoret, a race that is expected to electrify the North Rift town.
World beaters who have previously tested their athletics strength at the cross country race that traditionally takes place at the Eldoret Sports Club will be facing off in what is likely to be a scintillating show.
Prominent coach and one of the race’s organisers David Letting said on Friday that world 10km record holder Rhonex Kipruto and former World Under-20 10,000m champion Rodgers Kwemoi will be among stars battling for honours.
Cheptegei gunning for 5,000m-10,000m double at Tokyo Games
Diamond League - Monaco
(Reuters) – Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei says he is targeting the 5,000m-10,000m double at the Tokyo Olympics after breaking the world records in both distances this year.
The 24-year-old set a new 10,000 mark of 26 minutes, 11.00 seconds at the Valencia World Record Day event in October to beat Kenenisa Bekele’s time of 26:17.53 set in 2005.
At the Monaco Diamond League meeting two months earlier he had also bettered Bekele’s 16-year-old 5,000m record by almost two seconds with a time of 12:35.36.
If Cheptegei wins gold medals in both events at next year’s postponed Games, he would become only the eighth man to complete the double.
