Scientists explore Latvian society s immunity against Covid-19

(LTV Ziņu dienesta korespondente) Scientists are carrying out a major study to find out how many people in Latvia have had Covid-19 and got immunity against it, Latvian Television reported January 9. Sampling for antibody tests should be completed in the coming weeks before mass vaccination starts. So scientists call on GPs and residents to get involved in the study. Antibodies to SARS-COV-2 indicate that the person has had Covid-19. Many don t know that they are infected, because the disease can manifest itself without symptoms. Researchers therefore want to find out the true extent of the virus and how immune the Latvian population is.

Infection with Covid-19 has been detected in a cat for first time in Latvia RIGA, Feb 2 (LETA) - Covid-19 infection was detected in a cat for the first time in Latvia, moreover, coronavirus antibodies were found in several more cats, Uga Dumpis, the chief infectologist of the Ministry of Health, revealed at a meeting of the Saeima Social and Labor Affairs Committee on Tuesday. He noted that Latvia is the first country in this part of Europe to detect a cat to be infected with Covid-19. The cat has already left for Estonia, Dumpis said, adding that it had all happened recently. The infectologist said that the samples collected from cat had been tested on January 31. In total, samples were collected from 240 cats, some of which were pets from Covid-19 positive households.

School holidays extended for younger pupils

(Latvian Public Broadcasting) The Education Ministry has indicated that as of January 25, some pupils will return to school, said Education Minister Ilga Šuplinska at a press conference January 6. According to the Minister, epidemiologists say that the infection rate is still too high to organize on-site learning. Therefore, school holidays for grades 1 to 4 will be extended until January 25.  Other pupils will learn remotely, including grades 5 and 6, who will start learning on Monday, January 11.  It is hoped that after January 25, pupils from grades 1 to 4, as well as 9 and 12 could return to school. Masks will have to be worn by all pupils. State exams shall take place on-site. If the epidemiological situation is not favorable, exams will be cancelled.
