To the great frustration of Clear Space officials and its supporters, a special meeting continuing the public hearing for the theater’s Rehoboth Avenue project was postponed a week. Clear Space Theatre Company wants to build a new home at 413, 415.

Last Friday, Jan. 29, I attended a meeting of the City of Rehoboth Planning Commission as they evaluated Clear Space Theatre’s proposed new building. They have been assessing this application for two-and-a-half-years and, perhaps not unexpectedly, nothing new came up on Friday.
I understand the commission meets again next week, and may I respectfully urge them to make a decision one way or the other. If the vote is “yes,” then please do not impede that decision with so many caveats that in effect it becomes a “maybe.” If the vote is “no” then we can only hope Clear Space is not forced, reluctantly, to join so many other businesses that have recently moved out of Rehoboth.

Giles named new beach patrol captain
Rehoboth Beach announced Jan. 28 that Jeffrey Giles, a 30-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, has been named as the new beach patrol captain.
Giles, a Delaware native, held several DSP leadership positions, including supervising the maritime and scuba units. He also served on the safety committee for the annual Special Olympics Delaware Lewes Polar Bear Plunge that takes place in Rehoboth Beach.
Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks said Giles served five summers as a member of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, including as a lieutenant, before he was with the state police.

UPDATE: The vote was postponed one week to Friday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. to resolve any potential conflicts of interest within the commission, according to a statement from Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission Chairperson Jeffrey Trunzo. This also gives the commission time to review all written comments submitted before Feb. 5.
A theater company that has been a staple of the Rehoboth Beach community since 2004 is looking to establish a new home on Rehoboth Avenue – but some neighbors aren’t quite ready for the show to begin.
Ten days after the Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission approved the site plan for Clear Space Theatre’s two new buildings in August, a group of 15 residents signed and filed an appeal, concerned about the impact the theaters will have on the area.

The Clear Space Theatre board of directors has announced its new officers and members for 2021.
Donna L. West said she is honored to be named the board chair. Her executive team consists of Laura Mason, vice chair; Brian Ellis, treasurer; John Pitchford, secretary; and Kelsey Murphy, at-large member. Returning board members are Judy Rayner, Sharon Mack and Lou Katz. As Clear Space Theatre continues to grow, so does its board of directors, now with four new members, Jay Allen, Ali DiSabatino, Mark Hunker and Megan Nehrbas.
“Each new member brings their unique perspective and experiences which will help propel the theater forward during these challenging times. They bring a love of live theater and an appreciation for the theater s past, present and future goals. 2021 is going to be a great year for the arts in Rehoboth Beach,” said West.
