Nuclear energy production sinks to lowest level in four decades. For the past year, a global market share of 9.2 percent was recorded – the largest decline since the Fukushima disaster. Wind and solar plants alone generated 28 percent more electricity than nuclear power plants last year. But contrary to the declining developments, nuclear power could make a comeback. 22 countries recently announced their intention to triple their nuclear power plant capacities by the year. In Germany, the last three active reactors were shut down on April 15, 2023.
As of now, about 370 GW of operational nuclear power capacity is installed in 31 countries, providing about 10 per cent of the world’s total electricity, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
