really bad for the students coming in to senior year to go to college. thank you so much. i appreciate you sharing your story. good luck as you apply to school this year. i went through it. thank you. that s part of the story here that i have heard as i talk to students. they looked in particular at the uc system, where more than two decade ago they did away with affirmative action. they saw in the public universities about a 50% drop in minority admissions. then also, a reduction in the number of minorities even applying in the first place. that s the part that s hard to quantify. what message does this send to students? how will it change their application behavior and the dreams and the places they imagine themselves attending? we have colleagues who have been at unc s campus having very similar conversations. take a listen to some of the messages from students there.

schools they can see themselves in in the future. in fact, when you look at what happened in california when their uc system did away with affirmative action, and there was a 50% drop in minority enrollment in elite colleges, part of a state system that all people, all taxpayers in california contribute to. that kind of drop is what they re afraid will happen here, and they saw a reduction of students of color who applied to the schools in the first place. who decided to to apply to harvard and unc, people not give my resume and my life experience a second look. that s going to be hard for us to fully grasp, although certainly no doubt researchers and academic institutions like this one are going to be studying this in the years to come, and that s sort of the major anxiety we re hearing right now. what happens for those who come up behind us. how does this change their behavior this coming fall, and

rates rebounds after that. they have to do more work. just to be clear, erin, as a graduate of the uc system myself, whose class was bisected by that decision, there was a dramatic drop at first, significant that would have, you could argue, impact a generation of students who were attending that massive college system. of course. the uc had to figure it out, but the numbers did rebound as colleges hope to achieve what i believe they hope is a diverse set of kids, but without relying on boxes and stereotyping as they ve been doing for so long. i do just want to note we re going to talk about this in the show, the uc system and

many from the uc system certainly having some issues with how they handled things. you make that point, certainly one that s valid, but it s certainly something that people are looking at from different directions, and there is some disagreement on that. what do you make of this military service academy carveout? they re saying that for west point, for the air force academy, for the naval academy, that this doesn t apply. i m not reading a whole lot into that, to be honest. what it looks like from the footnote in the majority opinion is that the court is saying this wasn t before us, and we re not going to rule on it today. i think that certainly could be an issue that comes up in the future. the federal government was certainly very keen to argue it in oral arguments, but i don t think the court wanted to take that issue up, because it wasn t before the lower courts. i think that could be an area
