but he was not a fixer, he was a lawyer. the judge has fined trump twice for lashing out at michael cohen and now he is risking prison time with his closed verdict vitriol. his attorney tom blanche acknowledges jail time is a possibility telling the associated press he expects contentious sentencing hearing. u.s. news & world report writes , quote, if the former president is looking to ensure judge juan merchan includes incarceration as part of his sentencing, he is doing a really good job. joining me now, former federal prosecutor, senior writer for politico magazine, thank you very much for coming to the saturday show. both sides have a chance to weigh in on donald trump sentence, how likely are prosecutors to seek prison time? is a really hard question, i don t envy their position, to be honest. i will say do whatever their pre-decision is, as the trial is going on and trump was the
sensibility? did i overdo it about the diagnosis? was i sensitive enough that they had cancer? you know, not just an issue of race or ethnicity. we doctors should be doing that already, but to superimpose if a woke philosophy on us is going to make us more rigid, nervous and maybe undermine the very thing we re trying to do, which is to listen to the patient. jon: i want to put up the u.s. news & world report medical school rank ranking, because there s a similar issue at play here. there s harvard university, nyu your school can columbia university, johns hopkins and uc-san francisco all in the top five. but a couple of those schools you re not going to see in there anymore because they are pulling out. harvard and columbia along with a number of other schools say they re not going to participate in the u.s. news rankings anymore because u.s. news uses test scores. the student body test the scores
country s top medical schools are ditching the popular u.s. news & world report ranks over equity the concerns with duke, the university of michigan, column baa columbia, stanford and others saying they no longer want to be included in the annual list. in a january 24th letter explaining their withdrawal, the deans of the 11th-ranked icon school of medicine at mount sinai wrote, quote: diversity, equity and inclusion are important factors in our decision. we believe that the quality of medical students and future physicians is reflected in their lived experiences, intersecting identities, research accomplishments, commitment to the social and racial justice and a set of core values that are aligned with those of our school, end end quote. we re back with our panel. kyle, so what do you make of that explanation, and why are these schools cropping out? dropping out? well, when i m picking a surgeon, i know my first question is what is his lived experience like. no, i m focused on
competence, and part of that is his training. i m skeptical of these explanations. they say that the standardized test that is go into the u.s. news & world report ranking are able to be biased, they people who are privileged and be test prepped cobetter on them. but i would point to a faculty task force at the university of california a couple years ago that said test years are a better predicter of first-year performance than high school grades, and they also allow the school to pick out people from non-privileged backgrounds who can succeed in college. and so, i mean, whether dropping tests is one thing when you re talking about english majors or philosophy majors, but i think it s something totally different when you re talking about surgeons and so forth. paul: yeah. kim, we have heard this kind of talk, dei in humanities and in political science and other counties. but not so much in science and, certainly, not until recently in medical education.
decided in fact our current secretary of state i served in the state assembly, she pushed forward prep 16 that said let s put affirmative action back int place and again the voters deep blue state california has said absolutely not. and for good reason because people should be judged on merits and when they re judged by that, they should be rewarde for that merit. and i think when you look at this is kind of like they yell at harvard law schools they sto cooperating with the us news an u.s. news & world report rankings because they do very well they wanted to accept students who had lower test scores because in the name of equity. you know what happens is they re actually doing new students a disservice because they re allowing them to be placed in a school they may not be able to meet the academic standards of that school and said they end up not graduating and what is that due to their self-esteem? the goal is to get an education best for them.
