lawyers for civil rights are seeking a level playing, field a field in which a person s individual merits is what gets them admitted to the school. at this point, with this particular federal civil rights complaint, that is what we are seeking. that s what we are urging the department of education to enforce and with respect to the number of people who have attended harvard who may be nonwhite, and have been benefiting from this particular type of admissions policy, i would add that it pales in comparison to the number of white applicants and white families that have been benefiting from this and as i said before, up to 70% of those applicants who are admitted through these donor and legacy preferences are white. michael kept things, litigation fellow at lawyers for civil rights. thank you so much for your time tonight. seems like the people have the right lawyer on this one. we ll be watching. thank you. thank you so much. when we come, back folks, former vice president mike
not come from a federal civil rights complaint filed today with the u.s. department of education. now, the complaint challenges harvard s legacy admissions as a civil rights violation. and it seeks to force harvard to stop considering applicants relationships to alumni in the admissions process. the groups who have filed the complaint argue that ending legacy admission is more urgent than ever, because race conscious admissions policies may have helped to offset those legacy programs have now been banned by the supreme court. joining us now is michael kippins, litigation fellow and lawyer for civil rights, and lead lawyer on this complaint filed today. mr. kippins, thank you so much for being here with us. to what extent is this complaint a response to last week s supreme court decision on affirmative action? well, first, thank you for having me. i am glad to be here. we at lawyers for civil rights have been concerned with a donor and legacy preferences
be admitted, with an admissions rate of 42%. if you have a parent or relative who went to harvard, you were six times more likely than an ordinary student to be admitted for an acceptance rate of 43%. so this complaint arguing that this is just not fair. they want the u.s. department of education to call on harvard to stop doing this, to call this practice discriminatory. and of course, the timing of this matters so much, because it s less than a week since the supreme court severely limited the use of race in college admissions. and so these groups are arguing that if the court is going to do that about race, it is now even more imperative to eliminate any policies that disadvantage minority students while advantaging white students. jim? one interesting thing about these cases, if you go back to the harvard case, the data that the lawsuit found was a whole host of benefits that came in the process, including for athletes, right? folks who play sports, they got a big boost over the
children that make sense for them. we will shut it down, starting with agencies like the u.s. department of education. carley: how important is education in 2024 and what changes would you, somebody that works with children on day-to-day basis, like to see? this is the most critical issue we are facing right now. the candidates should be applauded, they are addressing the nation at its core. when you look deeply at the education system, it has to go to public school level. one issue you have when you focus on parents, some kids don t have parents. over 24.5 million fatherless kids temperature is time to look out for kids that do not have parents to stand up for them. those are kids you see, the 28
former vice president mike pence highlighted the ruling overturning the plan to forgive student loans. so you are going to say to working americans, to truck drivers, people working in the trades, we are going to take your taxes and pay down a part of the student debt of doctors and lawyers and ph.d.s. this was not about the middle class. vivek ramaswamy applauded the ruling to strike down affirmative action programs in higher ed and promises to end the department of education. we will shut it down, starting with agencies that should not exist, like the u.s. department of education. we will shut it down. republicans wanted to abolish the department of education in the 1980s. and former president trump reminded pro life voters justices confirmed on his watch
