The most recent American Rhodes Scholar class has been elected, and two United States Military Academy (USMA) officer cadets are among the outstanding students who will start their studies at Oxford, England in October 2021. The last time West Point had more than one Rhodes scholar was back in 2014.
“We are so proud of and thrilled for CDT Tyrese Bender and CDT Evan Walker, the Rhodes Scholars for the USMA Class of 2021,” tweeted Brigadier General Cindy Jebb, Dean of the Academic Board at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. “They will be tremendous leaders drawing on their experiences as Rhodes Scholars, and we are all excited for their next chapter,” she added.

For West Point Cadets Evan Walker and Tyrese Bender, the road to becoming Rhodes Scholars was paved with hard work and commitment to school, sports, and integrity but that didn t stop them from questioning whether they had actually won the prestigious award. I was in shock, Walker told CBS News.
Bender and Walker are among 32 U.S. students chosen to study at Oxford University in England. The 2021 class of Rhodes is among the most diverse ever. Twenty-one of the recipients across the country are people of color and 17 are women.

Cadets Tyrese Bender, Class of 2021, of San Antonio, Texas, and Cadet Evan Walker, Class of 2021, of Rowlett, Texas, were chosen.
Two West Point Cadets from Texas are on the path to becoming Rhodes Scholars, having been chosen to study at Oxford University in England.
Tyrese Bender, of San Antonio, and Evan Walker, of Rowlett, were chosen because they each “found creative and bold ways to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion through their leadership and studies at West Point,” Brig. Gen. Cindy Jebb, Dean of the Academic Board said in a statement.
Both cadets are set to graduate from United States Military Academy, also known as West Point, in 2021.
