The country continues to suffer from water shortages as it deals with its worst drought in 56 years. On Thursday, Typhoon Surigae reached its closest point, bringing moisture from its periphery to Taiwan proper. This moisture, combined with strong convection from the afternoon heat, led to rain in mountainous areas of parched central Taiwan, including Taichung City and Nantou County. Among these areas was Nantou s Qingjing, where heavy rains were reported at 2 p.m.

Heavy rain alert issued as Typhoon Surigae comes closest to Taiwan | Taiwan News

2021/04/22 11:18 NOAA animated GIF of Typhoon Surigae.  NOAA animated GIF of Typhoon Surigae.  TAIPEI (Taiwan News) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued a heavy rain alert for two cities and one county in northeast Taiwan as Typhoon Surigae comes closest to the country today (April 22). As of 2 a.m., Typhoon Surigae was 510 kilometers southeast of Taiwan s southernmost point of Eluanbi, moving northeast at 13 kilometers per hour. The typhoon has a radius of 250 km and is packing maximum sustained winds of 162 kph, with gusts of up to 198 kph, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). At 9:35 a.m., the CWB issued a heavy rain advisory for Keelung City, New Taipei City, and Yilan County. According to the CWB, easterly winds will blow part of the storm s periphery towards northeastern Taiwan, likely bringing rain to the areas listed in the advisory.

20 crew missing after ship runs aground in typhoon

Philippines 18 Apr 2021 A SEARCH was under way for 20 crew members missing in the Philippines after their cargo ship ran aground while seeking shelter from rough waters churned up by a typhoon, the coast guard said. The crew abandoned the vessel laden with nickel ore on Monday after it hit the shore in Malimono town on the island of Mindanao. Eighteen of them were still in a life raft when contact was lost yesterday, coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said. The whereabouts of the other two were not known. “Search and rescue teams are having a hard time due to strong waves, ” said Balilo, adding that an aerial search was also being conducted.

Bising affects over 59K families — DSWD – Manila Bulletin

Published April 21, 2021, 10:57 AM The number of affected families by Typhoon “Bising” in Bicol, Eastern Visayas and Caraga has increased to over 59,000 or almost 230,000 persons, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Wednesday, April 21.
