Getting a step on the farming ladder is far from easy and has become virtually impossible for some, with huge barriers when it comes to affording land and receiving any kind of government support. It can be a massive gamble entering agriculture, but with hard graft, ambition and determination, there are many new starts that have gone on to establish profitable businesses by putting new ideas in place. New entrant farmer, Gordon Whiteford, is a prime example of this, having been brought up on a dairy farm in south Ayrshire until the age of 10, before moving to St Andrews and then onto Inverness, to allow his dad to pursue an alternative career.
