MacAfee said at this stage it’s difficult to predict the level of cross-border travel, adding there are many reasons why Americans travel to Manitoba, including business, visiting family and vacationing at northern fishing lodges. The airport, he explained, is seeing an uptick regardless of the rule change.
“We are seeing more people travelling now that some of the provincial restrictions have been lifted for vaccinated travellers,” he said. “As our vaccination levels go up as a province and a country we are starting to see more people comfortable with travelling, which is definitely as positive sign.”
The airport normally handles between 12,000 and 13,000 passengers a day pre-pandemic. From a low of around 100 a day in April 2020, the numbers are slowly climbing to between 3,000 and 4,000 a day.
