He was the husband of Carol Doane Goveia, whom he married in 2009.
He was the widower of Rita (Haley) Goveia.
The son of Manuel Goveia and Agnes (Goveia) Tasha, he was raised in Provincetown. He worked for the town recreation department from the late 1950s into the 1960s, running the summer programs that included swimming lessons for the townâs youngest population.
During his time at Provincetown High School he played baseball, basketball and football, and ran track. His passion for music and mastery of violin inspired him to begin college as a music education major at Boston University; however, during his first year he realized his violin skills were not as strong as those around him. He transferred to Springfield College, where he majored in physical education and minored in health. In college he wrestled and played football and graduated in 1961, cum laude.
