certainly are, obviously, and by far the front-runner for the gop nomination. we ll see if those poll numbers change as a result of this. they have every time we ve had something like this, they ve gone up. let s bring in scott jennings now, the former special assistant to former president george w. bush. the context here what kristen just said, she said trump just gave an interview and said are republicans going to do anything about this. you guys are supposed to come knights in shining armor to his defense. what s your response to that? well, there will be a lot of republicans who come to his rhet rhetorical defense and help him as a public relations matter, but there s nobody that can help him from the evidence and these indictments. i heard ty cobbs saying it was a strong indictment. i read through it. you may stupid games, you win stupid prizes is what it looks like to me. i think there s going to be a lot of republicans especially house republicans in purple districts who are
reporter: yeah, and ty cobb has been out of the white house for nearly a year now. and not only does he not agree that the mueller investigation is a witch hunt, which also the president and his allies have repeated often times, he often disagrees with the president, when the president says that robert mueller is highly conflicted to be the special counsel. instead, ty cobb says that robert mueller is someone he s known for decades, and when he thinks of him, he thinks of him as a war hero. i think bob mueller is an american hero. i think bob mueller is a guy that, you know, even though he came from an arguably privileged background, you know, has a backbone of steel. he walked into a firefight in vietnam to pull out one of his injured colleagues and was appropriately honored for that. i ve known him for 30 years as a prosecutor and a friend. and i think the world of bob mueller. reporter: now, two other things from this interview with ty cobbs that stuck out. once, he says he di
there s no collusion. now they say, oh, well, did he fight back? you fight back, you say sir. you fight back, oh, it s obstruction. reporter: as trump s legal team cleans up the president s comments you would under oath? yes. absolutely. reporter: sources say the president s lawyers could push for written responses to mueller s questions instead of a sit-down. white house special counsel ty cobbs, saying the president wants to talk to mueller, but they proceed with caution. do you have any fear of a perjury trial? no, but i think it would be foolish without considering that possibility. reporter: a source telling cnn the president s attorney will argue to mueller s team there s no case against trump. i can tell you, there s no collusion. i couldn t have cared less about russians having to do with my campaign. reporter: meanwhile, chuck grassley announcing today he wants to release the transcript
of course. what do you think the chances are that robert mueller does call the president of the united states? i think the president is going to have to testify either in a voluntary interview or in response to a grand jury subpoena. look, there is a fair bit of case law in existence about whether the white house, including the president himself, would have to respond to a grand jury subpoena and it seems he would. ty cobbs showed a little bit of concern there, about a perjury trap, not surprising giving his client s, i would say, not always faithful adherence to the truth. there s an easy way to avoid a perjury trap, don t perjure yourself. that s another issue whenever you re going before anybody and answering questions. matt miller, always good to see you, thank you. up next, despite fears of a shutdown, traders on the floor seem unfazed. plus, what apple just did that made the president happy.
