Sanford elementary school won t close despite COVID-19 outbreak probe
SANFORD, Maine Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School is now the site of a COVID-19 outbreak investigation, after four cases of the virus were identified there during the past 14 days, Superintendent of Schools Matthew Nelson announced Thursday.
Nelson said the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention had informed him of the Twombley Road school s outbreak status that morning. Due to the Thanksgiving break, only one of the four was on campus while infectious, and the other three were classified as community transmission, Nelson said in a letter to the community.
Nelson said he had consulted with the CDC and determined that, while the school may have an outbreak status, there was no need to close the building.
