A predominantly baroque programme at this brand new concert hall found the RNS on disappointing form, although Haydn and Herschel brought drama and energy

My columns have been few and far between this year. On the surface this would seem to indicate that our orchestra, chorale and youth activities have been dormant but in fact, nothing is further from the truth. While there have not been public concerts, our chorale and Youth Jazz Ensemble have been meeting every week under their directors Ms. LeeAnne Campos and Mr. Derick Polk. Both have made recordings which have been released as virtual performances.
Thirty members of our orchestra, along with six guest musicians and many of our choristers, have performed all year on our Florentine Quarantine music series, creating 22 new videos for the public. These can be accessed at www.bremertonwestsoundsymphony.org/vch-free.

UMass Wind Ensemble
MSR Classics has just released the latest CD by the UMass wind ensemble, led by director of wind studies Matthew Westgate. “Quicksilver” features the world premiere recordings of three works, all of which were commissioned by the wind studies program as part of a larger consortium. These include Stacy Garrop’s “Quicksilver: Concerto for Alto Saxophone with Wind Ensemble,” which includes UMass saxophone professor Jonathan Hulting-Cohen as soloist; David Biedenbender’s “What is Written on the Leaves;” and David Maslanka’s “Concerto No. 3 (‘Do You Know My Name?’) for Piano, Winds and Percussion.” The featured soloist on the Maslanka piece is the late UMass faculty pianist Nadine Shank, to whom the CD is dedicated.
