The 1954 royal visit to Australia was a momentous occasion: the newly crowned Queen was the first reigning monarch to come to our shores, and an estimated 75 per cent of the population turned out to see her. Film producer and distributor Andrew Mackie mines the event in his debut novel, a historical soap that takes as many liberties as Netflixâs
The Crown and will appeal to the same demographic. Among the servants chosen to accompany the royal entourage are identical twins Violet and Daisie Chettle. It proves an arduous voyage, and tensions rise between the sisters as melodrama unfolds (from encountering an estranged aunt living in the Outback, to a flirtation that leads the Queen to lose her cool with Prince Philip).
