Nomadland has wandered straight into the Academy Award for best picture.
Itâs an unprecedented triumph in the awards showâs most prestigious category for a film with a woman as both director and lead. It beat out fellow nominees
Judas and the Black Messiah,
Minari,
Mank and
Promising Young Woman.
The filmâs leading lady, Frances McDormand, took out the award for best actress in a leading role (for the third time in her career). Anthony Hopkins won best actor for his work in
The Father.
The
Nomadland filmmaker also won best director, becoming just the second woman in the 93 years of the Academy Awards to win the award and the first woman of colour.
