The newspaper s reporter Terry Broadhurst has been despatched to write about bingo night in Ulverston. Bingo, he wrote, was a social occasion, a chance to win a bit of extra and, for some, an escape from loneliness. There were plenty of elderly ladies in attendance. Two bingo players enjoying a game at the Roxy in Ulverston in 1991 Terry was told by one chuckling man: For goodness sake don t sit in one of their specified seats! They have their own spot with their friends and woe betide any man who sits in their bingo pew. There was plenty of pre-game friendly chatter but also an underlying murmur of expectation of the game about to start.
