You do run into some uncertainties. Again, lots of different perspectives here. You may have some bias. Generals like to make themselves look good. Wars are nice for promotion. So, yeah. Got to be really careful about your sources. As historians you know not to take everything at face value and military guys, generals, officers doesnt mean theyre always right. Anything else . Members and theyre here tonight and wed like to have them stand so we could acknowledge them. [ applause ] in introducing tonights speaker, dr. Joann freeman, would you like to mention at the outset that one of her most commendable qualifications is that she received her ph. D from the university. Thats right. Uva, right. In any case, not long after receiving that degree she was recognized already as one of the nations top young historians. She subsequently has achieved widespread recognition as a scholar of the revolutionary American History. Shes the author of numerous articles in those subjects which include the journal including the william and mary journal and the yale law journal among others. Shes written oped pieces for the New York Times and has appeared in numerous documentaries on pbs and the History Channel and on radio programs for npr an

I think in a lot of ways, thats going to be his legacy. He is one of the most important black political figures of the postwar period as an intellectual, policy advocates, someone willing to speak truth to power and not just to white conservatives and white people, but really to black leadership and black people. Nuclear dread, Nuclear Anxiety hovered over the conflict during the 1950s and 1960s and even up to the 1980s to the end of the conflict. A fitting image to begin our class today. Today we think a lot about photography during the cold war, specifically american photography during the cold war. Imagine a week or two or even course of the subject think about general themes as well as case studies and in the meantime talk about some advances in Media Technology and how newspapers were printing photographs during these years. Before we get into photography, should make sure we understand what the cold war is. As we get further and further removed from it becomes more fuzzy and the collective unconscious. For a second to link this class to what we did last time. And last time we were talking about federalism and particularly the balance of power between states and localities. Now when people talk about federalism, they usually use the term to refer to the balance of power between the federal government and states. But last time we were talking about the debates between state and local level power. And those mirrored debates at the federal level and if anything they were much more contentious because so much governing authority was located in the states and localities. And what were talking about was a system of layered authority. Where states had control over the rights of citizens and the Public Interest. But they gave local areas Broad Discretionary Authority over a wide range of matters involving the Public Interest. So basically the states then handed over all of the discretion over this broad area of the Public Interest to local areas and so these jurisdictions that operated simult
