The news comes after the boss of the Bank Of England, andrew bailey, said the economy had turned a corner, but wasnt yet in a strong recovery. For more on this im joined now byjackie bowie, head of europe at chatham financial. Where is this growth coming from . The good news is the Surprise Upside in gdp was actually very broad based. If you look across the different components of gdp we saw a good recovery in the Service Sector activity. Actually good recovery in Consumer Spending as well because obviously thats been a big focus with The Cost Of Living issue and of course then with inflation that we have seen over the last year as well. So i pretty broad based recovery and again it took some economists by surprise this morning. Are you breaking out the champagne now, are the recession time is completely behind us . It certainly looks like we completely behind us . It certainly looks like we have completely behind us . It certainly looks like we have exited completely behind us . It ce
Tokmak june is not a Fait Accompli, or ruled out. Well, a cut in Interest Rates this summer would be welcomed by the government here in the uk which will have to call a general election by the end of the year. But the uks finance minister, chancellor of the exchequerjeremy hunt, says the decision is for the Bank Of England to make and must be independent. These are really finely balanced decisions, but i welcome the fact the Bank Of England has obviously thought about this very hard. They take this decision independently. And i would much rather that they waited until they were absolutely sure inflation is on a downward trajectory than rushed into a decision that they had to reverse at a later stage. What we want is sustainably low Interest Rates. And i think what is encouraging is that the Bank Of England governor, for the first time, has expressed real optimism that we are on that path. Jeremy hunt fair. Joining us now is jane foley, head of Foreign Exchange strategy at rabobank. Jan
Become the big market for them also, so that s also part of the european calculations. D0 the european calculations. Do ou the european calculations. Do you seeing that the Balance Of Power shifting, then, and they have to adjust accordingly . I think the europeans are acutely aware of the change in the Balance Of Power. And remember, for europe today, one nightmare that they really worry about is the reelection of donald trump coming in for the reelection of donald trump coming infora the reelection of donald trump coming in for a second time as president of the united states, and they know that donald trump has absolutely no emotional connection to europe. He does not quite see the value of his european allies, and europe may have to get a much more difficult geopolitical environment. In that difficult geopolitical environment, when europe is looking for ways and means to possibly restrain russia at that point in time, maybe they can talk with china. And as you know china played an I
Thatis pubs that are now coming back and that is great news for those communities, but of course this is a Press Release sent out by heineken, who now own thousands of pubs and this is something thats previously the government was concerned about having such dominance, so we are concerned about the dominance that heineken has in the pub sector, it is not healthy, it is not good for smaller brewers. We see cases around the country were heineken tenants are being pushed out. We are concerned about the way that heineken is behaving in some of those cases. Heineken is behaving in some of those cam those cases. Explain to us how independent those cases. Explain to us how independent pubs those cases. Explain to us how independent pubs have those cases. Explain to us how independent pubs have been i those cases. Explain to us how independent pubs have been affected during the past few years, obviously after the covid lockdowns as well as The Cost Of Living crisis . It is after the covid lock
Along with nearly 500 councillors. Mr sunak has said those losses were bitterly disappointing. Yesterday the former home secretary Suella Braverman said the Prime Minister had to own the results and change course. I think he needs to show people that he really cares about some of the things that hes talked about. He needs to actually lower taxes i in a way that people will feel, i not tweaking around the edges. If hes serious about migration, he needs to put a cap on legal migration. He needs to take us out of the European Convention on human rights. Thats how you actually send i the message that hes serious about stopping the boats. And while some are urging mr sunak to change position, others in the Conservative Party are clear that their best chance is to stay firmly in the centre ground. So while any imminent threat to eject mr sunak from here seems to have gone away, the long term pressure on him to change conservative fortunes has not. For labour, this week holds a very different
