ALTON Illinois American Water is installing more than six miles of sanitary sewer main in the Turner Tract, Shields Valley and Piasa Valley areas of Alton.
Ethan Steinacher, operations manager for the Central Division which includes the Alton service area, said that when Illinois American Water acquired the Alton Regional Wastewater system the company made a commitment to address requirements set forth by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to remedy combined sewer overflows.
“An investment of $50 million over a decade will be made to separate portions of the combined system. This work supports wastewater service reliability and source water protection,” Steinacher said.

A sewer separation project in parts of Alton will soon begin. Illinois American Water is announcing the multi-million-dollar project that will include about 6 miles of sanitary sewer main installed in the Turner Tract, Shields Valley, and Piasa Valley areas of the city.
This work is part of the agreement that was part of the sale of the infrastructure to the water company. Illinois American Water spokesperson Karen Cotton tells The Big Z this is a complex project.

But that does not mean work will occur in one area for 24 months. Rather, projects will continue to progress throughout neighborhoods during that time period. Cotton asks everyone to use caution while in the areas of the construction.
