season. for christmas they re going out to a cabin with extended family members, sit by a campfire, cook marshmallows, maybe see the first snow for the year. the lesson that they takeaway is that, you know, we re trying to focus on what really matters this holiday, which is spending time with people we love as opposed to binging on sweaters we might wear once a year. turkey prices are up some 20%, and that s reflective of other costs as well, john. yeah. i think the one price that isn t up this year is cranberry us. we have a debate about cranberries. it s a big thing. in another paper, we won t say the name. about the evolution of cranberries. i m not a cranberry that s my favorite part of thanksgiving. go ahead we interrupted you. it might have been your show i learned that fact.
what does this mean for a family looking ahead at the christmas season? are they making those tough choices between christmas presents and heating their homes? they absolutely are, molly. and this is probably one of the worst situations i ve seen for energy going into winter, you know, at least since the 1970s. you know, not only are households getting hit with inflation, turkey prices are through the roof, but they are having to make serious choices that can impact their lives and their livelihoods, you know, between food and energy. and this shouldn t be happening. you know, we have a country where we have some of the best resources of energy in the world, whether it be, you know, oil, natural gas, but yet because of the green energy movement we have really discouraged the investment in those type of fuels and that s leaving people out in the cold and that shouldn t be happening at this time of year.
different foocte factors. in fairness, you can t pin it on the biden administration on the federal reserve. what happened to turkey is avian flu. that killed 8 million turkeys out of our 46 million turkeys and so turkey prices go up. the other factor that affects all the things like bread and stuffing and pumpkin pie and all that is the drought. this huge drought going on out there. almost at record levels. certainly highest in many years. we can debate, the one sort of policy area here. we can debate whether global warming has something to do with this, climate change something to do with this or not, but drought a big factor because it means less wheat, fewer potatoes and so forth also driving um prices eenormously for wheat an the ukrainian war drove up prices for wheat, hence higher prices for dinner rolls and
