Road resurfacing work is expected to begin on I-70 near the West Virginia Welcome Center in Ohio County by next week if weather permits.
Motorists traveling Interstate 70 near the West Virginia Welcome Center in Ohio County can expect road resurfacing repairs to begin by next week near where the Tunnel Ridge mining company performed longwall mining beneath the area just a few months ago. According to West Virginia Division of Highways Area Engineer Mike Witherow, the road resurfacing work has been delayed slightly because of the recent wave of rainy weather and the resurfacing work is “weather dependent.”

It’s become an annual occurrence for travelers along Interstate 70 at the West Virginia-Pennsylvania state line to encounter single-lane traffic and orange barrels as part of Tunnel Ridge LLC’s longwall mining project.
The work is starting up again this month, and will last for a several weeks as crews slice away a seam of coal from a panel locateddeep beneath I-70.
This is the third winter for the work, which is expected to last several more years. There have been no major issues following the mining.
To the traveling public, use caution and exercise patience through the area, as speeds will be reduced and, as the weather warms, more vehicles will be hitting the highways.
