× OFFICERS investigating cannabis cultivation in Barnsley have recovered more than 5,000 plants in the last year, new figures have revealed.
The most recent find was at a commercial property on Market Street in the town centre on Tuesday, where more than 650 plants were seized by officers from Barnsley Central’s neighbourhood team and tasking team.
Various investigations have yielded hundreds of cannabis plants, particularly those deemed to be Albanian operations - which bosses told the Chronicle has led to 2,091 plants being taken off the street in the last 12 months.
A series of stings around the town centre took place last June, where several Albanian nationals were taken into custody and certain hallmarks of such operations were identified - such as high-value equipment, modification to properties such as diverting electricity, and a liveable kitchen, living room and bathroom otherwise surrounded by rooms housing cannabis cultivations.
