News: OLF’s Colonel Gemechu Ayana taken away by security forces; PR says whereabouts of detained members unknown; chairman remains incommunicado

Addis Abeba, May 19, 2021 – Thirteen people including OLF leader Colonel Gemechu Ayana were reportedly taken by security forces after the court ordered their release. The Federal High Court 3rd Anti-Terrorsim and Constitutional Bench acquitted 12 people who were charged with terrorism, according to the lawyer Tuli Bayisa.
Tuli recalled the sequence of events where families of the prisoners went to Kilinto federal prison with the release warrant. According to him, Nine of the prisoners were released after the paperwork which took ‘a long time to process’ while the remaining three of them remained in prison. Addis Abeba, April 13, 2021 –The Federal High Court Lideta Branch, First Constitutional and Anti-terrorism Bench has today told the defendants on Jawar Moahammed et.al file that the court has suspended witness hearing for two more weeks after prosecutors filed an appeal at the Federal Supreme Court on April 9, 2021.

Prominent Oromo opposition leaders in Ethiopia have decided to end their hunger strike after 38 days, according to their lawyers.
The former U.S. citizen Jawar Mohammed, a media mogul, and Bekele Gerba both members of the Oromo Federalist Congress have agreed to end their protest tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m., according to Tuli Bayisa, a lawyer representing the prisoners. Another politician Hamza Borana will also end the hunger strike.
The decision comes after intense lobbying and pressure by religious and community leaders including Olympian Derartu Tulu. The jailed politicians were demanding the government release prisoners of conscience and reinstate opposition party licenses, their lawyer said.

Addis Abeba, February 19/2021 – The Federal Attorney General (AG) has appealed at the Supreme Court to continue blocking the medical treatment of four of the imprisoned leaders and members of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) who are on hunger strike with only water consumption since January 27.
