540 graduate from Shoemaker High

Services held Tuesday for Tuke Shoemaker, 95

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mary Alice “Tuke” Shoemaker at the Central Texas Stave Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. Roughly 80 family members, friends and students from Shoemaker High School attended the service despite the cold weather. The Shoemaker High choir provided a final performance for the wife of the man their school was named after — the late retired Gen. Robert M. “Bob” Shoemaker. The Shoemakers were big supporters of education in the area, setting up a scholarship for students to attend Central Texas College or Texas A&M University-Central Texas after graduation. Many Shoemaker High alumni were also in attendance.

KISD reports passing of Tuke Shoemaker

Tuke Shoemaker, wife of the late retired Gen. Robert M. Shoemaker, has died at the age of 95. The Killeen Independent School District reported Mrs. Shoemaker’s passing Sunday on its website in a tribute to the longtime supporter of education in the area. Mrs. Shoemaker, along with her late husband, was deeply committed to the district’s students, particularly those at Shoemaker High School, which the district named after the retired four-star general in 2000. The school celebrated Mrs. Shoemaker’s 95th birthday with her in February, hosting a special luncheon for her featuring cheerleaders, drill team members, Island Dancers, choir, step team and the Pandemonium steel drum corps — as well as a birthday cake.
