Regular service speed has resumed on the Green Line Extension branches to Union Square and Tufts after the abrupt discovery of narrow tracks on the line caused the T to drop trains to a turtle’s pace at 3 miles per hour.
The MBTA resumed service to Union Square station on the Green Line Wednesday morning following the completion of construction, two days ahead of schedule. Green Line service between Lechmere and Union Square had been closed since in September 20 to allow for Massachusetts Department of Transportation construction on the Squires Bridge in Somerville.
The T said Wednesday it eliminated all speed restrictions on the Green Line extension, bringing trains back to full speed across the agency’s newest part of its subway system after weeks of frustrating slow zones.
The Squires Bridge Project was initially anticipated to take 42 days, but MassDOT was able to modify the schedule and reduce the construction period to 25 days.
