The Invercargill City Council will decide in May if it will create a Māori Ward for its next election in 2022. Last year local government minister Nanaia Mahuta expressed concerns about a lack of Māori representation on councils and the small uptake of Māori Wards being created by councils. She was concerned that when a council did take the step to introduce a Māori Ward a poll could be demanded by only five percent of the population signed it to overturn the council’s decision.
