The Tudor warship had lain for 437 years on the bed of the Solent outside Portsmouth Harbour after it sank in 1545 while the king watched from Southsea Castle. Above: Roses being scattered.
The discovery of HMS Gloucester (depicted above), 28 miles off the coast of Great Yarmouth, was announced last week. Former British Army chief Lord Dannatt has said the ship could be raised.
The Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s favorite warship, is under attack by harmful compounds. Scientists will have to carefully remove the tiny attackers if they wish to save the famous Tudor vessel.
The vessel was salvaged in 1982, having spent some four centuries on the seabed of the Solent, off the coast of the Isle of Wight, where she sank on July 19, 1545 in a battle against the French fleet.
