Michael s tenacity and knowledge brought Craanford Mill back to life

Michael Lyons (95), late of Ballygullen, Craanford, passed away on January 27, in the loving care of family and nursing staff at Oakfield Nursing Home. Born in Clonamona, Craanford in March 1925, Michael was the third child of John and Elizabeth Lyons. He grew up with his brother, Willie, and sisters, Sadie and Susan, all of whom predeceased him. Alongside his family, Michael s uncles David and Lawrence, worked the mills at Craanford and the farms in Clonamona and Ballygullen. In an era when mechanisation was limited, there was plenty of work for everyone. Michael s formal education at Craanford NS was brief. The early demise of his own father meant that he took up farming duties early in life. He had a great love of milling and spent many happy days in his youth learning the crafts associated with it from his uncle David.
