Another Weekend Behind Bars For Sikhala - NewZimbabwe com

By Mary Taruvinga MDC Alliance vice chairperson, Job Sikhala will spend another weekend behind bars after his bail appeal hearing was moved to the 26th of this month. The case was postponed after the state received his record of proceedings late. “The record from the Magistrates’ Court was only released yesterday (Thursday) in the afternoon and the State requested a postponement to enable them to file a response,” said Paida Saurombe who is representing Sikhala. “We will file heads of argument this afternoon and we hope to have the State file its response on Monday,” he said. Sikhala was arrested on January 9 at the Harare Magistrate’s Court where he was part of the legal team representing journalist Hopewell Chin’ono who is being accused of publishing falsehoods.

Judgement Reserved In Chin ono Bail Appeal

By Mary Taruvinga HIGH Court judge David Foroma Thursday indefinitely reserved judgement on a bail appeal application lodged by freelance journalist Hopewell Chin’ono. Chin’ono has been languishing in remand prison for two weeks after he was arrested for allegedly publishing falsehoods in a case involving a child who was initially said to have been struck and killed by a baton wielding Harare police officer who was enforcing the country’s lockdown regulations. He was denied bail by Harare magistrate Lazini Ncube who ruled that he was likely to re-offend since he committed the offence while on bail for two other offences.

By Mary Taruvinga MDC spokesperson Fadzai Mahere has been granted $10 000 bail by Harare magistrate Trynos Utahwashe after spending an entire week behind bars. She is accused of publishing falsehoods in a case involving a woman whose child was erroneously reported to have been struck and killed by a baton wielding Harare police officer who was enforcing the country’s lockdown rules earlier during the month. As part of her bail conditions, Utahwashe ordered that she must not interfere with the mother of the child at the centre of the controversy, Rebecca Musariri. The magistrate also ruled that conditions of her previous bail conditions will apply in the politician’s present case.
