Savannah s Forsyth Park Master Plan is is a mix of suggestions

Jane Fishman is a contributing lifestyle columnist for the Savannah Morning News. I’m nervous, very, very nervous. Not because my computer is “in the shop” and out of commission for four or five days, in the milky-white, blemish-free hands of some youngster with lots of 21st century dexterity but no sense of humor and no people skills. Not because something is eating my butterfly weed and I have a dog who is overly attached to me and who whines when she doesn’t know where I am. Not because the markings from a supposedly temporary tattoo pen, administered by an excited 9-year-old, show no signs of disappearing. And not because the subject of mold is in the air (and our houses), something I do not wish to face.

Forsyth Park master plan too focused on redesign, not enough on maintenance

This is an op-ed by Scott Center, a Savannah small businessman and a frequent visitor to Forsyth Park. Savannahians love to complain. It is our birth rite. Despite the fact that we live in the most beautiful city in America, we gripe about the weather, the bugs, the tourists, the politicians, the drinking water, the newspaper, etc.     In my 65 years, the one thing that I have never heard anyone complain about is Forsyth Park. I have heard it described as our crowning jewel and the heart of the city, but I have never heard it mentioned negatively.  The city loves the park, no one more than the Friends of Forsyth. For five years, this off shoot of the Trustees Garden Club has taken it upon themselves to raise money to create a master plan. Parks need to be maintained. All trees and plants eventually get sick and die. A schedule of care and new planting has to be devised and adhered to. Without a plan, the park could be altered on a whim.
