Pre-pandemic, up to 230 patients attended the department per day. It’s now back to almost 200 per day. Over the past year numbers attending the local A&E with fractures had reduced by 20 per cent. At a Western Trust media briefing, Geraldine McKay, Director of Acute Hospitals at the Trust, said numbers had risen because children are back outside playing again and more vehicles are on the roads.

Northumberland wildlife charity celebrates 50 year anniversary

A Northumberland charity is holding a series of activities until December 2021 to mark its 50th anniversary. Launched in 1971 from a Portakabin behind Newcastle’s Hancock Museum, the Northumberland Wildlife Trust is now one of the largest conservation charities in the region and has logged over one million volunteering hours. The first event to mark the anniversary is on Thursday May 6. Northumberland Wildlife Trust – 50 and Fabulous will be held online and attendees able to find out more about wildlife in the region, how the trust is engaging with young people, and the Catch my Drift project. The one-and-a-half hour event will close with a question and answer session with Mike Pratt and Duncan Hutt, the Trust Director of Conservation.

It has produced a map showing the impact of global warming leading to more extreme weather phenomena including more destructive storms, heatwaves and periods of drought. And while some areas - like the Suffolk coast - would be changed by natural forces, climate change will accelerate these so things could happen much faster than expected. The National Trust is looking to preserve its heathland at Dunwich.
