Trussville Council honors Girl Scout for efforts against distracted driving

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE July 13, 2021, is Alex Rudick Day. The Trussville City Council made the proclamation during its regular meeting on Tuesday. National Gold Star Girl Scout Alex Rudick was honored during July 13, 2021, Trussville City Council meeting. Rudick was honored for her efforts in gaining a National Gold Award for her project as a Girl Scout. Alex Rudick is an ambassador for Girl Scout Troup 872. For her Gold Award project, Rudick was inspired by her cousin, Jessica Butler, of Moody, who was killed in a crash in 2017. Rudick has made videos, created a website, talked with lawmakers about creating a hands-free law for the state of Alabama and consulted with the CEO of StopDistractions.org. Her videos have also been made available to Driver’s Education instructors statewide.

Widening plan in the works for North Chalkville Road to I-59 in Trussville

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE The Jefferson County Commission has a plan to widen North Chalkville Road from Boulder Drive to Interstate 59. Commissioner Joe Knight said a lane will be added to get drivers to the interstate quicker. There will also be turn lanes added to Green Drive and Pineview Road, for those wanting to turn left onto North Chalkville Road. “This is one of the main projects that they are going to zero in on and do,” Knight said. The part of North Chalkville Road from Boulder Drive to Green Drive will have to be studied closely because of a drop-off. The road could be shifted or some fill work may be done, depending on how much room is needed. Knight said those details will not be known until the study on that specific area is complete. He did say he believes a guardrail will be added to that area of the roadway.

Trussville Council hears from Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation President

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE The president of the Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation attended a Trussville City Council workshop on Thursday, July 8, 2021. The historical marker outside the Cahaba Project. Amy Peterson O’Brien said she wanted to address concerns about property value, property rights and litigation. O’Brien said the non-profit foundation was founded with a sense of urgency after years of concerns in the area. She said the purpose of the foundation is to be an educational resource. She spoke to the council about the importance of preserving the area and using it for education and to share with others.

Trussville Council in support of freestanding ER in city limits

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE The Trussville City Council met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at City Hall and approved a resolution in support of a freestanding emergency department being placed within city limits. Grandview Medical Center has plans to build an emergency department in a new development across from Winn Dixie, formerly known as the Hamilton property. No lease has been signed, but the developer and the hospital have been in talks for some time about placing the center on that property. The medical center has filed notice with the State Health Planning and Development Agency and will present a proposal later this year.
